But before I tell you how, let me start with a personal
story...
Back in 1976 when my son Brandon was only two years old
I had a "life changing moment." On a sunny August morning I had left Brandon
standing in the window of the daycare, crying and reaching for me as I slumped
to get into my car. The lump in my heart and the tears rolling down my cheeks
only solidified the fact that being a full-time working mother was not right for
me! I needed to find some means to add to the household income while still being
able to enjoy my son.
Fast forward 2 years. One week before the birth of my
second son Bryan, I quit my full-time job and I was NEVER AN EMPLOYEE
again!
I loved being home with my sons! Wow, this was the life
for me...Until...the bills kept coming in and I began to make minimum payments
instead of paying things in full.
Then one day it hit me! I needed to do something
quick...
The Beginning of a New Life
I called my mom who was a leader with a well-known
Direct Selling Company and asked her if I could join. She was surprised yet
excited to share with me the incredible opportunity she had enjoyed for the many
years she had been in business for herself.
The next morning I woke up with a "fire in the belly"
that was incredible, and I was off and running -- to start my own business. Even
though I had very few people to hold parties to help me get started, (mom had
been holding parties for them for years) I did have a vision for my business and
for myself … certain goals that I wanted to achieve, things I wanted to do.
I was so excited. I'm not sure my feet were touching the
ground! I wanted to share my enthusiasm with those people who I thought were
important in my daily life.
The first thing I did was to call my friends to ask them
to "help me get started in my business." Instead of hearing "that's great"
and "you'll do well", these so-called friends said things like "you
did what?", "you're kidding, aren't you", and "good luck … you're going
to need it". Well, 2 good friends, and 2 customers from my Avon route
helped me launch my Direct Selling business.
My first few parties were uneventful and bookings were
hard to get. I was beginning to think I had made the wrong decision! But, I kept
going. I attended all of the trainings and meetings offered by my upline and I
think my mom even gave me a couple parties to help me out. MOM WAS
PHENOMENAL in the business and had earned several award trips and was
Queen of Sales for our group! I attended some more parties with her to watch as
she "worked her magic." As I watched her it dawned on me that people were
booking parties like crazy because she was having fun and more importantly -
THEY WERE HAVING FUN!
I
Made Plenty of Mistakes!
Oh NO! I had a really bad problem. I was SHY!
I didn't know how to create the same experiences for my guests that my mom was
creating for hers. I wasn't sure I could expose myself to everyone and "be on
display" like she was, but...I had to try!
I went to my next party with a new attitude
and I'm not sure what happened but something 'just clicked". I had discovered
deep down inside of me was another person just waiting to escape. I began to
create fun, educational experiences for the guests at my parties and my bookings
started to grow. My business was looking better but it still lacked the
consistency that I needed to provide the weekly income that would prevent me
from returning to the “9 to 5" grind!
Lucky for me, my mom was a great sponsor and I had great
leaders and mentors in the business. I became a “student of Direct
Selling.” I attended every meeting, conference, convention, anything I
could to be around the people who were succeeding in the business. I was lucky
to also have joined a company that had great trainers and training systems in
place. I listened, learned and most importantly implemented everything I could!
My Mother's 4 Secrets to
Success
1.
You have to have a great attitude 100% of the time! You need to surround
yourself with people who have positive attitudes. It’s contagious. What others
think about your business is not as important as what "you think about your
business!"
2. Get started in
the business right away. Don't wait until you know it all, because you never
will! Find a mentor or a group of people who have succeeded doing what
you’re trying to do. Listen and ask questions - find out what strategies worked
for them and learn from the mistakes they made.
3. You have to be
willing to try new techniques. What works today may not work tomorrow. So
watch for changing trends and continue to learn from others who are on the
cutting edge of change.
4. Set goals, take one day
at a time, and have fun. Contest prizes and trips are a part of this
business, WIN EVERYTHING YOU CAN!
I immediately began to apply her pearls of wisdom … and they worked!
Do What You Love
and Enjoy the Ride!
The first year in the business I earned my first award trip to Maui,
Hawaii! That was the real beginning of what I knew was going to be an
“incredible ride.” Year after year I earned every trip and contest
prize that was offered.
I became a leader six months into my Direct Selling career on January 1,
1981. On January 3, 1981 three of the five people I had signed quit the
business! My husband Larry, pretty much told me I wasn’t a very good leader,
which provoked me just a little. I dug in my heels, started recruiting more
people than I had ever dreamed was possible and I even had some of my recruits
getting recruits of their own. Two years later I was the Number One District
Leader for our company and was voted the “Outstanding District Leader.” During
this year, I had also promoted two more leaders which helped me to promote to
Regional Director. I loved my business! I loved my life! Everything was GREAT!
Overcoming
Adversity!
Until…
Late February, 1989 when I learned the company I had loved being a part
of and that had provided me with so much opportunity was closing it’s doors. I
was devastated! I had no idea what I was going to do? I had worked so hard to
build my Customer and Hostess base. I had worked really hard to build my team. I
was losing it all. But…
We had a wonderful President who really cared about the people in the
company. He had gone above and beyond to make arrangements for us to join
another company if we so desired. I decide to attend the Michigan meeting to
listen to the company owners introduce the new business opportunity to us.
I’m not sure why, but I decided to join and I ordered my kit immediately.
The next few months were pretty much horrible. I had convinced a few of the
Hostesses who had already booked a party for my first company to hold a party
for the new products and I began to earn the “instant cash” again. But, there
was no way I was going to recruit anyone. I wasn’t sure if I even liked it
enough to stay! Oh, did I forget to tell you that only 2 people from my original
team decided to join the second company and 1 of them quit 30 days later!
One night, about 3 months after I had joined my new company, something
magical happened. A guest at the party came up to me and told me she wanted to
start selling. Yikes! I had to make a decision. Was I going to stay with this
company or not?
Well, you can probably guess I did decide to stay and I rebuilt an entire
organization again! I began to earn every contest prize and every incentive
trip. I was always one of the top 10 in Personal Sales and Team Sales and
held several number one positions through the years!
Life was GOOD once
again!
Over the twenty plus years I actively worked my Direct Selling business, I
realized one of the things that really motivated me was helping others succeed
in Direct Selling. Not only did I take time to teach and train the members of my
team how to reach their goals I was taking calls from others in my company who
called me for help. I spent hours on the phone helping others by teaching them
the same simple techniques I taught every member of my team.
I soon began to realize the only difference between those who succeeded and
those who didn’t was their attitude. Everyone knew exactly how to do the
business. Everyone had the same training. But everyone did not have the same
desire. My "key role" as leader was to help the members of my team reach the
goals they set for themselves! The systems and programs we used for our team
helped our leaders become some of the best!
In November 2001 I set out
to accomplish a Personal Goal!
Of the 12 goals I had set for myself 10 years earlier while listening
to Tony Robbins "Personal Power" program, there was only one I still needed to
achieve. It was time for me to pursue my goal of becoming a motivational speaker
and sales trainer!
I was passionate about my business and the success I had attained. NOW I
wanted to help everyone who struggled, no matter what company they were with,
reach their goals.
I know with the right attitude and
knowledge of the basic skills anyone can succeed in Direct Selling.
Over the years I had been an avid student of Direct Selling Success. I had also developed several
systems for booking, sponsoring and leading a team that are truly fool-proof for
anyone who really takes the time to study and implement.
