Want to Have Fun - How to Move from Boring
to Entertaining at Your Parties
As I was driving with the top down on my
husband's convertible, hair blowing in the wind,
one of my favorite Cyndi Lauper songs came on
the radio. Of course I had to sing along. I'm
sure you remember the music so go ahead, sing
along with the lyrics.
"I come home in the morning light, my
mothers says when you gonna live your life
right. Oh, mommy dear we're not the fortunate
ones and girls just wanna have fun, oh girls
just wanna have fun.
The phone rings in the middle of the
night, my father yells, "what you gonna do with
your life?" "Oh daddy dear you know you're still
number one." But girls just wanna have fun, oh,
girls just wanna have fun.
That's what they really want, some fun
when the working day is done, oh girls just
wanna have fun, oh, girls just wanna have fun.
Now, you might be wondering why I began this
article with the profound lyrics of a Cyndi
Lauper song. Even though the song was released
in 1983 the words still hold true today. When
the working day is done, girls just wanna have
fun. My question to you is this, "Are
you providing fun for the guests at your
parties?"
What does your presentation look like. Do you
feel compelled to spend as little time as you
can get away with at the party? Do you believe
your guests need to be informed about all the
features and benefits of your product? Do you
believe the more they know, the more they'll
buy? In some cases this is true and of course if
you have a product that needs to be demonstrated
you must do a demonstration, but, you can still
add an element of fun to your party. When you
add "fun" to your parties you create "an
experience" for your guests.
Let's suppose you are invited to a party for
the same company two nights in a row. You are a
"party queen" who loves to attend and also have
parties! You decide to attend both parties. At
the first party you fall in love with the
product and really want to book a party but the
consultant the first evening is pretty boring
and you get the impression all she wants to do
is show a few products, take orders and get out
as soon as she can.
You decide to wait until the party tomorrow
night to see if the second consultant is any
better before you decide who you will book your
party with. You arrive and are greeted at the
door by the second consultant who is set up and
ready to go. She enthusiastically shakes your
hand as she introduces herself and welcomes you
to the party. She begins to engage you in
conversation immediately and invites you to come
in and join the party. You watch in amazement as
the consultant does the same thing as each guest
arrives. During the presentation she jokes, has
fun and encourages the guests to get to
involved. Within 10 minutes of arriving your
decision has been made. You will host a party
for the second consultant.
Which consultant are you? I encourage
you to take a second look at yourself and your
presentation. There are many fantastic
companies, providing a variety of products that
not only can be purchased at other home shows,
but in retail stores. What is your competitive
advantage? What makes you different from the
rest? What makes you better than the rest? WHY
DO YOUR GUESTS WANT TO BOOK FROM YOU?
Are you the first consultant who just wants
to get in and out as soon as possible or are you
the second consultant who loves what she is
doing and wants to provide a friendly, fun
experience for the guests who attend your
parties? The reason I ask is this, people will
book with people they like. People will book
with people who care. People will book with
people who are having fun and loving what they
do. People will book with someone who engages
the guests and creates a fun experience for
those who attend. Don't worry, even if you are
shy (I'm a recovering introvert) there
are still many things you can do to put some zip
into your party and some bookings in your
calendar.
- Greet the guests. I cannot even
begin to tell you how many times I have
attended a party where the consultant did
not personally take time to introduce
herself to EVERYONE in attendance. As Julia
Roberts said in Pretty Woman to a
salesperson who had not treated her
properly, "you work on commission, don't
you? Big mistake, huge! Well, I'm off to go
shopping now!" You work on commission
too! If you expect people to spend money
at your party, don't you think you should at
least take a few minutes to get to know
them? I teach a "meet and greet" in
my "It's a Party Out There" video
which is something I used for years while I
was in Direct Selling.
Now, I have to admit the first year I was in
business I was so shy I didn't engage the
guests as much as I should. I introduced
myself at the beginning of the presentation
but I didn't go out of my way to meet people
as they arrived. As my self-confidence grew
I overcame my shyness and began to lighten
up and have more fun. I met guests at the
door with a big smile and a handshake. I
welcomed them to the party and invited them
to come on in and get ready to have some
fun. I SET THE STAGE!
- Have Fun! Having fun and doing a
good job puts more people in your hostesses
living room! Hostesses who have a good
experience at the first party they attend
tend to share their enthusiasm when they
have their own party. Here are a few things
you can do to increase the "fun factor"
1. Use Theme Parties. I know you have
probably heard this before but if you aren't
doing it, why not? If you offer the Hostess
a choice and she decides against it, no
worries, but you'll be surprised how many
will take you up on it. When the future
Hostess selects a theme for her party make
sure you assign her the homework of
reminding her friends about the theme. My
favorite is the "banana split parties"
(find out more on the "Presentation Pizzazz"
audio CD.
2. Play Games. YUCK! I HATED TO PLAY GAMES!
For the first 10 years of my career I only
played one game, which was an introductory
game to help me remember the names of all
the guests in attendance. Then I added the
"Booking Game" and "Sponsoring Game" to my
presentation. I only played games that would
provide me with the results I wanted from
each party. Introductory Game objective -
remember names. Booking Game - Get 3 to 5
bookings from every party. Sponsoring Game -
get recruit leads. Games are an easy way to
get the information to everyone without
throwing up on them. Yikes, I've been at
those parties before!
- Lighten Up! Guests attend your
party for a variety of reasons and only one
of them has to do with purchasing your
product. Some will come to visit their
friends (after all, we are promoting this as
a fun girls night out.) Some will come
because they love the product. Others will
come because they feel obligated to the
Hostess. It doesn't matter why they come, as
long as they are there keep them
entertained. Even though we would love to
have everyone's attention all the time, it's
not going to happen! GET OVER IT! If I
had an occasional rowdy group I would laugh
and tell them if they didn't behave I was
going to separate them. Most of the time
they got the message and toned it down a
little, if they didn't I rolled with it and
if it was too rowdy I stopped and let them
begin their shopping.
- Engage the Guests. You must
keep your guests involved. I loved to pass
products around an sometimes the samples
were flying around the Hostess' living room.
Don't let them just sit or stand. Keep them
as involved as you can. You can do this by
answering questions or you can also have the
guests ask you questions during your
presentation. If you have no formal
presentation make sure you keep rotating
between the guests in attendance. Don't let
anyone be alone for too long.
- Interact with the guests.
Often you will have one or two guests that
are "the class clowns." Joke with them, have
fun with them. The more interaction you have
with each guest the more likely they will be
to book a party with you. I often appointed
"a secretary" at my party and I informed the
guests that I didn't know any of the prices
so if they had a question, please ask "the
secretary." I compensated "the secretary"
with a small gift. 90% of the time, the
person whom I appointed "the secretary" for
the evening booked a party.
Everyone has a "fun side", you know the side
of you everyone sees when you are at a party
having fun with your friends. Bring that "fun
person" along with you to every party and watch
your sales and bookings soar.
