Reasons Why People Will Want to do Business With You


In the midst of today’s turbulent world, some direct sellers assume consumers are so worn down by economic uncertainties that they are retreating within themselves and curtailing all activities. Just read the recent headlines and they say it all! Because of the economic uncertainty more than two-thirds of consumers say they either strongly or moderately feel the need to find ways of reducing stress in their lives. The gloomy economic news can be a tremendous benefit for your direct selling business.

"According to the Yankelovich Monitor, while the economy is indeed worrisome, it has not made consumers any less interested in finding ways to be happy. They’re continuing to look for opportunities to fulfill key lifestyle preferences. However, to do this, they know they have to make some trade-offs.

If consumers can’t afford to have fun and be happy in the same ways as they did before, then they’ll hunt for alternatives that are more affordable and accessible.
Rather than retreating into a cocoon, consumers today continue to be engaged and active. They’re not ready to give up on happiness just because times are tough. In fact, almost eight in 10 consumers today say they often escape from their problems by doing something to take their mind off what’s bothering them.

This Hiving mindset is about interaction and relationships, and that’s giving consumers energy to continue to express themselves and to renew their connections with those who are important to them, as well as to the larger community. Hiving is about reaching out to others instead of retreating from them. A hive is not sealed off; it is part of the surrounding environment. Hiving involves having fun and finding happiness by connecting with others. Almost two-thirds of consumers today say they would rather spend their leisure time at home rather than out and about, up from 59% in 2004. And 60% say they get all, almost all or most of their satisfaction from their home and family, compared to 11% who get satisfaction from away-from-home activities." Implications and Opportunities for Direct Sellers, your direct selling business is Perfect for Potential Hostesses and Potential Recruits:

  •  It's a Perfect Way to Entertain. With more and more people entertaining at home your home parties can be the perfect way for them to entertain and earn Free products. Whether making telephone calls or booking at your parties always lead with your company hostess program as the main reason to host a party, but follow up with other reasons why people book. Example: People who love to entertain, love hosting home parties because they can get together with their friends. People who are really busy don't have as much time to see friends and family so they love to use home parties as a way to gather with friends and family, shop and save lots of money at the same time. Often when people give you a reason why they can't hold a party, you can show them why it's the same reason they really should think about holding a party.
  • It's a Perfect Way to Connect. Use home parties as a way to connect. Consider ways of helping hostesses make their home parties more fun so they can promote their party as a "fun way to shop." Theme parties are a great way for you to get guests more engaged during the party.  You can use "Toast to the New Year" parties as explained in the Jump into January Teleseminar, "Luau in January", "Fuzzy Slipper Party in February", "Margaritas in March". Sometimes, just helping with a fun theme selection helps hostesses get involved in making sure more people attend the party. Having something the guests need to do is a great way to insure your hostess makes her reminder phone calls.
  • It's a Perfect Way to Interact. You must constantly create opportunities for interaction. Guests don't come to be lectured to death. Make sure you tell stories about what the product has done for someone rather than sharing the boring details of what the product can do. Pass, pass and pass some more. The faster you can get the products moving around the room from guest to guest the more engaged you will keep the guests. Involve as many of the senses as you can, let them see it, hear it, smell it, touch it or taste it as the product determines. Ask guests to share stories about how they might wear or use a product.
  • It's a Perfect Way to Bring the Goods to Them. Our business is all about bringing products and services to their home. People love convenience. We are addicted to anything that makes our life easier. Ever since the day of the first door to door salesperson people have embraced the convenience of shopping at home. When time allows you can do "quick parties" for hostesses who don't have a lot of time. You may suggest stopping by with a few products and dessert and ask her to invite a few neighbors over for an hour. It will take the one-on-one sales presentation to a new level when she has a few friends over at the same time.
  • It's a perfect way to have fun while you work. For the twenty plus years I held home parties there were probably only about 20 that I absolutely did not like being there. Most of the time people are in good spirits, they are having fun, you are having fun and making money...ah, life is good! Talk about it at your parties.You have the perfect opportunity to offer to someone who loves being with people. You can offer anyone the chance to be around people and earn an incredible income.

    Bottom Line
    The economy certainly has consumers worried, but that doesn’t mean they’re looking to dig in and hide from the world. They still want to enjoy themselves and be socially engaged. The opportunity is there for direct sellers to tap into what consumers are doing more of—enjoying family and friends in more financially responsible ways. Whether it's being a hostess or being a consultant direct selling has something to offer everyone who loves being social and also loves being home. Sometimes it's how we position what we have to offer that makes someone decide to take action. The current economic conditions can actually be a blessing to your business when it comes to booking more parties and getting more recruits. It's only a matter of perception!

Don't Let Being Too Busy Cost You Business

December is a crucial time to keep your business growing and as one of the busiest months of the year it's easy to forget and overlook important parts of your business. You take off to do some shopping and forget you made an appointment to meet with someone at 3:00 at he . She arrives at the coffee shop and calls you 15 - 30 minutes later wondering where you are. Oops, you are too far away to meet with her and want to reschedule but she decides to forget it. Result, You've lost a recruit.

If you looked at my datebook for December while I was actively working my direct selling business you would have seen a schedule that looked much like this.

Week One:

Monday, Dec 1 - party, Tuesday, Dec 2 - party, Wednesday, Dec 3 - party, Thursday, Dec 4 - party, Saturday, Dec 6 - Opportunity Meeting and Training,

Week Two:

Monday, Dec 8 -party, Tuesday, Dec 9 -party, Wednesday, Dec 10- party, Thursday, Dec 11 - party, Friday, December 12 & Saturday, December 13 - Hostess & Customer Appreciation Open House 12:00 - 8:00 both days

Week Three:

Monday, December 15'th - Prepare for Christmas Party, Tuesday Dec 16'th Team Christmas Party and Meeting, Wednesday, Dec 17'th - Christmas shop all day, Thursday, Dec 18'th - Christmas shop all day, Friday, Dec 19'th - Wrap gifts while kids are in school. 6:00 p.m. Make Christmas Cookies

Week Four: Monday, December 22 plan shopping lists for parties and shop for party essentials, Tuesday and Wednesday prepare food, Thursday, December 24'th - Mass 4:00 p.m., Christmas Party 6:00 - 11:-00 (40 people at MY House for Phelps' side)11:00 put presents under tree and watch It's a Wonderful Life. Thursday, December 25'th 7:00a.m. Prepare Turkey, 8:00 a.m., open gifts with boys, 3:00 - 10:00 Christmas party (Essiambre's ,my maiden name 40 - 50 people at MY house), Friday, December 26'th wake at 5:00 a.m. to hit after Christmas sales.

Week Five: DO NOTHING!!!! (Don't forget to mail invitations for first week of January parties.

Some time during all the parties, Open Houses, and shopping I still had to make time to work my business. You see, even though it looks like I'm really busy when I list the schedule above, in reality I still had plenty of time to get things done for my business. Now granted I did not work a full-time job as many of you do so I still had time during the day to keep my business alive. If you are working your direct selling business in addition to a full-time job, it's even more important for you to have an organized schedule.

With everyone having more on their plates than most months even the most organized person in the world can become harried and scattered during December. I know, it happens to me. I also know I'd rather have a dinner party not be perfect than lose a hostess or potential recruit. Since I know you also, don't want to lose a hostess or a potential recruit  I've decided to share a few tips that helped me survive December.

Here's a few suggestions to help your business survive and thrive in the the New Year.

  • Don't wake to an un-planned day. It's important to know exactly what you have to get done so why would you want to chance forgetting something important? You can prepare your list of things to do before you go to bed or you can make sure you create a list of things to do first thing when you wake up. I always preferred beginning my list the previous day and then adding or subtracting anything when I reviewed it first thing in the morning.
  • Create a list of phone calls you need to make each week and make sure you follow up. The Oprius software shown below has really helped a lot of people make sure they follow up when they need to.
  • Begin following up now if you don't have the guest lists back for January bookings. The longer you wait the harder it will be for you to get the guest list back in time for early January bookings. Offer a gift to get the list to you in 3 days. Remember when you are hostess coaching to say, "I'm going to make this easy for you, because all you need to do is return the guest list in 3 days."
  • When you have a few minutes get invitations ready for your parties to be held the first week of January. You'll want to mail invitations on December 26'th or 27'th so having them ready before Christmas will spare you last minute scrambling.
  • If you do a lot of entertaining like I do make sure you have menus ready for each party. For each menu create a list of ingredients and shop at one time for all parties if possible. Also, use the pot luck method and save having to do all the work yourself. Most people would be happy to bring a dish to pass rather than have the person hosting the party have to prepare everything. It works for my friends and family so if you haven't yet tried there is always time to start.
  • Take some time for yourself. I like to watch Christmas movies while wrapping gifts to help get me in the spirit of the season. Bubble baths are a must at least a couple times a week. Oh and don't forget to get a manicure just before the holidays, it makes you feel good!

    I love this time of the year. The hustle and bustle, the snow (unless you are unfortunate enough to live in a warm climate), the parties, friends, family, crabby people, shopping, wrapping, making phone calls, sending cards, cooking, baking all of these things create "the most wonderful time of the year."
