What's Your "I DID IT STORY?"

Easter weekend my daughter-in-law and I took my 3 year-old grandson Nickolas to see "Monsters vs. Aliens." The previews came on for some upcoming movies and a couple were down right scary for a three year old. Before the movie had started Nickolas was already wanting to leave. We settled him down and when the movie began it wasn't too bad. Then all of a sudden we were introduced to "the Aliens" who looked a lot scarier than Nickolas wanted. He kept watching but soon I took him on my lap and told him he could cover his eyes if he didn't want to watch anymore.

In the comfort of my lap he started getting a little more courageous and ended up watching the entire movie. Walking out of the show he looks up at me and say, "I did it gamma! I watched it!" He was so excited he watched the entire movie that all the way home all he could say was "I DID IT!"

It got me thinking to the times when I was really excited that I had accomplished something. I've had some incredible "I did it" moments throughout my life! Lots of them have been personal, like marrying the love of my life and sitting in the bleachers at my son's graduations! Others have been business "I Did Its" like the first trip I ever earned and the first time I was crowned #1 Leader!

Often it's as simple as losing a couple pounds when you weigh in at your WW meeting, or completing your workout routine when your body wants you to stop! There are so many times we rise to meet the challenges in our daily life. But we all too often forget to take time to celebrate and revel in the fact that "I DID IT!"

It's very easy to beat ourselves up if we don't do something correctly or if we don't accomplish we set out to do. It's not so easy to give ourselves the credit we deserve but seldom give ourselves. We seldom take time to stop and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done!

Hey, what's that all about? When you do something you set out to do, don't you think you should stop and say, "I DID IT!" I must confess, being around Nickolas the last few months since he started the "I did it" phase has been wonderful and exciting to watch. We can learn so much from children if we only take the time to pause for a few seconds and watch the world from their eyes.

Children get excited about trying new things. For kids, everything is an adventure and unless they are exposed to over-protective parents children will be curious and they will continue to find answers to the many questions they have inside them. They won't be afraid to try new things, or if they are afraid their friends will help them through it with encouragement (or sometimes daring or taunting.) Their inquisitiveness and desire to have more "I did it" moments

Here's a few simple steps to help you have lots more "I did it" experiences.

  • Decide What You Want to Accomplish. This could be a personal or business goal. You might want to lose 5 pounds this month, or maybe you want to hold 8 parties this month. It doesn't matter how big or little your goal or objective is, what matters is that you improve or gain from reaching your objective.
  • Baby Step Your Way to the Final Desired Outcome. Figure out what you need to do to reach your objective and break it down into easy bite-sized pieces. What's the best way to eat an elephant? One bite at a time! What's the best way to reach your goal or objective? One step at a time. You could create a fun chart and cross off the steps along the way to reaching your objective. If your goal is 8 bookings this month, create a chart with 8 "circles" each representing a party. Every time you hold a party you color a "smiley face" in one of the circles. Once you have all 8 circles filled in you'll really have something to be happy about! You'll have your "I did it" story. This works well when you are trying to earn a company contest or promotion too! Make your poster fun, creative and keep it in front of you all the time.
  •  Own Your Success. Don't be afraid to share your success with others. Now there is a big difference between obnoxious boasting and excitedly sharing how happy you are to have reached your goal. You don't have to go on and on and on about how HARD it was, instead you could offer your success story as a way to encourage someone to pursue a goal they may have been putting off. We relate to other people and their stories. I booked my first Arbonne party back in 2002 when the consultant shared her story about moving up and earning a Mercedes. I wanted to help her out since I knew how excited she would be when she reached her goal, which of course she did.
  •  Reward Yourself for a Job Well Done. You don't have to invite anyone to have a celebration once you reach your goal, you can have a "mini-party" all by yourself. However, it's more exciting if you have a spouse or a few close friends celebrate with you so invite some of your close friends or family members over for a small get-together to share the good news. You can also reward yourself with something tangible when you reach one of your goals. I have a habit of pre-determining what I'm going to reward myself before I even set the goal. For instance, when I was in Weight Watchers and I had set a goal to lose 25 pounds I knew I would need a major wardrobe overhaul so I promised myself I would take $500 and go shopping. The day I weighed in and I had reached my goal, my sister and I went shopping and I had a blast celebrating that "I did it!"
  • Congratulate Others When "They Do It!" We all love to party when someone graduates from high school or college, gets married, has a new baby, lands a new job, gets a promotion. Some of us are real party animals and will celebrate at the drop of a hat. We honor people when we are take time to celebrate their accomplishments and achievements. When I earned my first award trip back in 1981 my leader picked me up to go shopping for a dress for the award night. Then as I was getting ready to pay for it she surprised be paying for the dress as a reward because "I did it!" There are plenty of times we can cheer someone up and keep them motivated to achieve their next goal or objective just by sending a card, a small gift or by giving them a call to let them know how proud we are of their accomplishments. You'll often find the people who you recognize when they accomplish something are some of the first to congratulate you when something good happens to you.

I hope you feel good after reading this article and more importantly I hope you take a few minutes to realize how many times your really "did it." I know there are many things you have done over the course of your life that you may or may not have realized at the time.

Booking Teleseminar

For the last 3 months over 4,000 people have gained valuable information on how to book more parties to grow their direct selling business. They have learned valuable information that I could easily charge at least $50 for and they were able to listen for free. WHY?
