7 Simple Steps to Accomplishing Your Goals

Friday evening, January 2'nd 2009 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern I received a phone call. The person on the other end was surprised I had answered the phone. She said, "Hi Karen, this is Elaine and I just wanted to tell you I'm sitting in the hotel by the airport in Atlanta and tomorrow morning we'll be boarding the plane to Cabo. I just wanted to thank you for helping me get there. I had tears in my eyes! I was so excited that Elaine Miller, in spite of the obstacles she had to overcome, never took her eyes off the goal and earned her first trip with Home and Garden Party. I was so PROUD of her!

Last February I sent out a survey to people who had purchased my Whole Enchilada. Five people who completed the survey were selected to receive 6 free coaching sessions with me. Elaine was one of the winners! When I read the reason why Elaine wanted to have me coach her I just knew she had to be one of the ones I selected. I could tell she really knew what she wanted to accomplish and with a little help from me it just might happen. I'm so glad it did!

During my first call with Elaine we discussed what she had accomplished the previous year with Home and Garden Party and we talked about what her goals were for the upcoming year. She had a chance to earn a trip to Cabo San Lucas with her company and it was her dream to earn this trip and take her husband who was undergoing chemotherapy at the time. She knew she had some challenges ahead of her but she was ready to embrace the challenges and she promised not to give me any excuses! She was true to her word!

The first thing Elaine did was send me the qualifications and rules for the company trip so I could review them. We then discussed where she was now and what the best plan of action would be for her. We knew the first thing she had to do was to get her calendar filled with bookings. I gave her ideas of who to call and homework to have new bookings when we talked the following week.

Each call Elaine and I would review what she had accomplished. She totaled her sales and subtracted them from what she needed. She kept track of her new recruits and their sales and always knew within a few points what she still needed to earn the trip. She began to build the momentum and she began to build her self-confidence. I knew she could do it. I know it wasn't easy for Elaine and there were a few times she doubted whether or not it would happen. It was at those times I kept telling her, "you can do it, don't worry about what happened last week, let's look at what you can do next week and the week after that and the week after that.

Elaine provided support to her husband during his chemo sessions and even took a two week vacation during the time I was coaching her. During her vacation she even held a couple parties. She stayed focused on the end result and was so excited the day she called me to tell me she had made it. Elaine's story can be your story. If you have never earned a company trip or contest it's not too late. You can do anything you want to do, have anything you want to have and be anything you want to be! All you need is a goal, a plan of action and a "never give up" attitude and you can set the world on fire! Here are a few suggestions to get you on the right course!

  1. Begin with the end in mind. When you are working on a contest, trip or promotion you must know exactly what it takes to get there. Often there are more ways than one to achieve the desired goal so I find it best to have my main goal and a "fallback plan." Make sure you have figured out everything, down to the very last cent and the very last recruit. Nothing is worse than missing by "a little bit" when a little extra preparation could have made the difference.
  2. Know your strengths and weaknesses. If you know you are a strong recruiter in numbers but your recruits don't produce a lot of volume you may have to recruit more people than someone else who has a higher "recruit sales" in order to reach your total. You may find you are strong in personal sales but your recruiting numbers leave a lot to be desired so you will have to implement measures so you have enough recruits. Definitely focus on your strengths when working on a contest especially at the beginning as a fast start makes it easier to stay focused.
  3. Always know exactly where you are. You should be evaluating and re-adjusting your goal at least once a week. Every week total your sales, recruits, commission, or whatever it is you are tracking and subtract what you had the current week from your total so you will have your new goal. The more often you re-evaluate the easier it is to re-adjust if you need to. It also makes it easier to "not worry" if you have a bad week because the adjustment will be spread over the remaining weeks and you realize it's still doable.
  4. Have a support person and or support team. Everyone has people that are cheerleaders for their success. It may be your sponsor, up-line, leader or friend in the business. It may be a coach you have hired to help you through obstacles. If you don't have someone you are talking with that can support you and give you constant encouragement you need to find one now. I remember the first time I decided to go for the number one leadership position with my company my leader and I were on the phone several times a week. I was sharing what was happening and she offered more ideas and lots of encouragement. Have a support team makes the victory so much sweeter!
  5. Don't Give Up! No matter how far you are lagging don't throw in the towel. I've known lots of people who may not have reached their goal the first time around but kept at it until they accomplished what they set out to do. Slowing down or quitting at the first obstacle or setback will put you further away from your goal. Keep a steady pace when you can and kick it up a notch when you are ready to pursue the goal again.
  6. Celebrate! Celebrate your little successes on the way to your goal and celebrate when you have reached your ultimate goal. If you're not having fun it's not a PARTY!! Let everyone know what you accomplished. It's your time to shine and as long as you don't go overboard bragging people will be glad for you and your accomplishment. Our team had a "bragging session" at each meeting where members could share with others the goals they had reached as well as other accomplishments they had achieved the previous month. It might be a small goal (paying off a credit card) or a large goal (putting the down payment on a new home), we all shared in the excitement of a job well done!
  7. SET A NEW GOAL!!! I believe this is where the BEST rise to the TOP! Successful people know you can't finish one goal without having taken time to set another. As soon as the party is over it's time to move to the next big goal! Don't rest or you'll surely begin sliding backwards. It's time to start the process all over again!

I can assure you there were a few times Elaine was feeling like she had bitten off more than she could chew. I know there were a couple times she was really questioning herself and whether she was capable of accomplishing the goal she has set for herself! I AM SO PROUD OF HER and the fact that in spite of any obstacles she NEVER GAVE UP!

Booking Teleseminar

As I sat and had lunch with some of the attendees at my Vegas training in October we discussed how each had come to hear about me.  Some of the consultants had found me through the search engines but a large majority of them had been introduced to me and my trainings through a friend or team member in the industry. All of them had mentioned how much they loved the teleseminars I offered.

Last year, after much hesitation I made the decision to ask for a small investment for the monthly teleseminar and replay (Only $17) or the teleseminar and MP3 (only $27). Of course this met with resistance from those who were used to getting them all for free. During the discussion it was mentioned that a lot of people were introduced to me through a teleseminar and that was one of the reasons they joined my newsletter group and continued to  register for other things I offered.
